Newborn Photography tips for parents

First of all congratulations on the birth of your newborn baby - through the haze of sleepless nights and feeding schedules, a newborn photo session is probably the last thing on your mind!

The first 2 weeks of your babies life contain some of the most special moments. This guide is here to guide you through what to expect from a newborn photo session. It is my job as a newborn photographer to make sure you can sit back and relax while I capture those special moments for you.

1. What should I expect?

You should expect a relaxed informal atmosphere - the focus will be entirely on your little one, your family and the love you all share together. It is my job to do all the work and yours to sit back and enjoy every minute. I spend hours preparing for each newborn session to make sure all poses and props are thoroughly thought through and prepared so we can seamlessly go between them. Newborn babies are of course unpredictable - don't worry I am prepared for this!

2. How long should I expect the session to take?

Newborn sessions can usually take anything from 2-4 hours, it really depends on how quickly we can get the shots you are after. I don't specifically set a time limit for newborn sessions as I don't like them to be rushed. I will spend as long as it takes to capture the moments you have discussed with me before hand. It may be necessary to schedule multiple visits to achieve this as your little ones safety is the number one priority, we will stop if necessary and come back.

3. What should I do to prepare?

What we are looking for would be a happy content baby - I know easier said than done! Some things to consider, which will make for a better session are as follows:

  • Keep your home warmer than normal - babies love the warmth, the general rule of thumb is if it's too hot for the adults - it's probably about right for baby.
  • Dress your baby comfortably - for a photo session a loose fitting nappy is perfect.
  • Make sure you have any outfits or props you want to include to hand - when I arrive sorting through the props will be the second thing I do after introducing myself to both you and your baby.
  • Try to keep your baby awake and stimulated for as long as possible before the session - this will make baby more likely to sleep during the photo session.
  • I ask that you feed baby at least 2 hours before the start of the session, you can also give a brief feed 15 before the session starts - while I am getting things setup. Your baby will be happier and more likely to sleep with a full belly.

4. What should I wear?

The general rule on this is to be neutral - avoid any bold brand names or bright colours.

Make sure you wear something which will compliment your baby, but not match.

5. Can other family members be in the photos?

Of course they can!

Before your session we will discuss and plan who will be in what photos along with the style of shots you are after.

All I ask is that family members other than babies mum and dad stay quiet and away from baby during the baby only photos - I need to be able to work with your baby in a calm and controlled environment so as to get the best result possible for you.
